When brick becomes art
After emerging as the symbol par excellence of the economic crisis of 2008, which left a multitude of buildings half-finished and many others vacant, the brick has become the driving force behind the artistic initiative Postcrisis, which includes eight artists’ works using this material.
Postcrisis proposes an investigation and subsequent personal interpretation of the brick, the most emblematic material of the crisis of 2008. The eight artists selected by the Dilalica group have gone through a learning process of the material by attending a seminar and visit to a factory where they could observe the entire creation process of a brick, from the extraction from the quarry up to production. Once familiar with the basis of their future creations, Tamara Arroyo, Marlon de Azambuja, Iñaki Domingo, Mario Espliego, Esther Mañas and Arash Moori, Clara Montoya, Rafa Munárriz and Agnès Pe had the mission to develop an original work with bricks.
The result of the artistic process of the eight protagonists of the show is a series of eight unique approaches, both conceptual and material. In them, we can appreciate recognition of the different architectures that make up a city, even consideration about the economic crisis which is considered as the close of a phase and the appearance of new possibilities for society.
It also proposes a revolution in the use of materials associated with construction and the architectural works and different thoughts on real estate speculation and the value of a basic material like the brick.
Cati Bestard, Marta Sesé and Louis-Charles Tiar are the curators of Postcrisis that, after moving through different, independent creative spaces in Madrid, can be seen in the Cultural Center Conde Duque in the capital from February 15 to March 29, 2020.
