Throughout 2019, in Spain, a considerable increase has been noted of the companies in the construction sector that declared bankruptcy. 20.5% of all the companies in this situation were in the construction sector.

During the last year, the number of companies that have declared bankruptcy in Spain has increased compared to the previous year. Specifically, 20.5% of all companies that declared bankruptcy were engaged in construction. This tendency is gaining momentum and putting at risk the feasibility of small and medium companies, freelance workers, carriers and subcontracted companies that directly depend on the correct operation of large construction companies. The affected companies complain that there’s not enough force to change this dynamic and this situation leaves them in a vulnerable position with the large companies and the trend they set implies a decrease in the number of projects and recruitment.
For different associations that represent these kinds of professionals, totally dependent on the construction companies, this news is very worrisome because they see their companies and jobs compromised. Entities like Fenadismer (Spanish National Federation of Association of Carriers of Spain) or Amaexco, the Association of Construction Excavators and Carriers of Madrid, have expressed their concern. Data has also been analyzed by the consulting company DBK, coming to the same conclusion.
We are in a state of alert. We have to be aware because if this dynamic doesn’t change significantly, we will see ourselves in the mist of another crisis in the sector. One fact that could reverse this situation is the macroeconomic forecast which indicates a sustainable growth of the economy of the country in the following months.
