The main players of the Spanish construction and real estate sector joined in the Climate Emergency Declaration created within the framework of the UN Climate Change summit celebrated in Madrid. According to sources from the Association of Developers and Construction companies of Spain and the principal producers of building materials, this declaration will help promote a model of change in the sector.

On December 2nd, the conference of the United Nations on Climate Change (COP25) began in Madrid, whose main objective is to achieve international agreements on a wide consensus in favor of climate change slowdown and the stopping of global warming.
The construction and real estate sector wanted to take advantage of the significance of this event to promote the initiative in favor of the transformation of cities in the interest of sustainability and care for the environment. The signing of the Climate Emergency Declaration is a part of the activities of “Observatory 2030”, the instrument in which the Board of Governors of the Architects Association of Spain (CSCAE) demonstrated its commitment to the Agenda 2030, the future group’s project proposed by the UN.
With this Declaration, the endorsers hope to create more awareness in the sector and society in general about the “vital importance of adapting the building environment”, since building and construction are responsible for, approximately, 40% of the carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
Some of the key aspects in order for the Declaration to reach the transformation of the sector are:

  • The commitment and cooperation of all players so that proposed changes become real and are seen in a short period of time.
  • The commitment to promote awareness activities for people on the importance of adapting housing, buildings and cities in order to stop the climate emergency.
  • The collaboration with the Public Administrations to accelerate the transformation of cities towards sustainability.
  • The choice for designs that go beyond the zero carbon emissions standards.
  • The promotion of the responsible use of natural resources.
  • The reduction of waste generated and
  • The choice to use renewable materials.
The signing of the Climate Emergency Declaration means another step toward the sector’s commitment to more respectful practices for the planet.
